Texting Takeover!
Texting has become the governing means of communication for teens all over the world. Teens seem to be texting 24/7, they text while at school, work, at dinner, and here’s a shock even while driving! There is just something about texting that seems to have teens hooked. It is an instant way for them to communicate with their friends and family without the lag time of the outdated methods such as the sending of e-mails, letters, or postcards. Also it allows teen to communicate things that would otherwise make them feel awkward or embarrassed to say in person. Basically texting is a way for teens to feel a sense of belonging, whether it be at school or within their friend group. Research done by the Nielsen Company has shown that teenagers sent and received an average of 2,272 text messages per month in 2008— that’s almost 80 messages a day. It is to the point where people have troubles sleeping, completing their homework, and even simply paying attention, because they are constantly thinking about their phone. It is as though texting has even taken the place of actual conversations in our generation. It is crazy to see that people will be sitting two feet away from one another and at the same time they will text one another instead of being vocal. Texting seems to be the way to “stay in the loop” among high school students, because that is how everyone makes plans, asks questions, and cures their boredom. Essentially texting plays a key role in our generation, because it gives us a sense of belonging with our peers. The following link shows great statistics and information on the effect that texting has on teens. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/26/health/26teen.html

I think that in our generaton, texting has gotten out of control. I'm not saying I'm against texting; I text, too. But, teens seem to have gotten impolite with their phones. Most teens concentrate more on their conversation than the fact that it might not be an appropriate time to be texting. I don't understand why some teens need to text during school. We're there to learn, not to talk to friends and make sure we know what is happening in our social lives. The only way I can see texting as ok in school is if it is a parent/relative or if it is an emergency. Even then, a quick text doesn't have to disrupt others around us. In my opinion, teens should learn to be more respectful with their phones and know when is not an appropriate time to use them.
ReplyDeleteI agree that texting has become a problem. But the part that caught my eye was when you said that it lets us communicate things in an awkward situation that may be embarressing. Some times when your with a group of people you dont know very well you may want to get away from them. So instead of calling someone and saying outloud to come pick me up you can just text it. Its a silent way out a problem. In this case I think texting is good, but otherwise in some cases it just has become rediculous.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with your opinion about facebook getting out of control, but that seems to be all there is to your post...opinions. With all due respect, I'm not sure what your intentions are, but if you want to be a little more convincing, maybe back that ish up with some facts. That's just my two-cents. Whether you take it or leave it, it won't hurt my feelings...after all, it is just 2 cents :)
